Free Family Fun at The 2017 Talking Trees Children’s Trout Derby

Do you remember your first fishing trip? A child’s memories of fishing adventures can last a lifetime. When an event gives kids the opportunity to learn new skills, feed their natural curiosity, and have fun in the process, it quickly becomes a beloved tradition. The much anticipated Talking Trees Children’s Trout Derby will take place August 4–5, 2017 in Cherokee, NC. Thousands of youngsters ages 3 to 11 will attend this event—free and open to the public—with their families. For many, this is their very first time practicing their angler techniques.

A regional favorite, Talking Trees is the largest free children’s event in the Southeast. The two days of fun begins on Friday, August 4, with registration and explanation of the rules from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Cherokee Fairgrounds. Children unable to register on this day will be allowed to register on Saturday, August 5, the day of the tournament.

The second day of registration begins at 7 a.m. on Saturday. At Oconaluftee Islands Park, time for fishing runs from 8 a.m. to noon. Complimentary breakfast and lunch will be served.

“There is no better feeling than the day of the event, walking around and watching all the smiles on the kids’ faces and seeing all the families spending quality time together,” says Talking Trees event coordinator Lisa Frady. “Children grow up way too fast and it’s the moments and memories you get with your family from these events that are going to last a lifetime.”

Register early as space is limited! The first 2,000 registered participants for the event will receive a free fishing pole. Other items included are a free shirt, hat, hooks, sinkers, and bait.

Door prizes will be distributed on Saturday throughout the day. Prizes will be awarded for the biggest catches. At the end of the tournament, winners will be announced and brought up on stage to receive their trophy.
