Oconaluftee Indian Village

The Oconaluftee Indian Village – One of the Favorite Seasonal Attractions in Cherokee NC

Open from May 1, 2014 until November 8, 2014, the Oconaluftee Cherokee Village is one of the region’s most beloved attractions. Once you are at the Village, you will see that it’s more than just a place, its living history. The best way to get there is to un-tether yourself from the world that you know, and take a trip through time to experience a piece of Cherokee history. Follow it and embrace it at your own pace.

Turn off your stress. Put your watch in your pocket. Sit under the trees, breathe the pure mountain air, and notice that the only sounds here come from nature. No cars. No blaring TVs. And instead of burnt fossil fuel, the faint tang of wood smoke wafts by on the breeze. Immerse yourself in an interactive historic journey throughout Cherokee history, led by native tour guides educated in Cherokee culture, native dress, crafts, and lifestyles. As you step into the Oconaluftee Indian Village, you’re transported back to witness the challenges of Cherokee life at a time of rapid cultural change.

NEW FOR 2014:
Extended Season! We will now be open until November 8th. All visitors are invited to spend leaf season with us. School groups are welcome. Call for hours of operation. 866-554-4557

Video Tours are coming! This year we will be offering a new self-guided video tour of the Oconaluftee Indian Village. Our new video tour allows visitors to use an OIV issued Tablet or IPad to take a virtual, self-guided, station to station walking tour of the whole village. The visitor can navigate from station to station by following the video icons on the tablet. Each video explains and gives examples of Cherokee crafts, houses, and traditional ways of life. This version allows visitors to visit our village in the off season months, when weather isn’t ideal to have a fully staffed village. We will begin our virtual tours on April 1, 2014 and run throughout the month of April.
